Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service

Catholic Education has been so commonplace in the United States, that perhaps we neglect to consider the contribution we make as a people of faith through our commitment to faith-based education. In these final days of January we annually single out Catholic Schools for special note, precisely because they represent a civic contribution like none other. 24% of our Senate and over 33% of the House are self-identified catholics. The Catholic School system in the United States is the largest private (non-public) system in the country, and saves the country over $24 billion (yes billion) annually based on 2015 budget numbers.

Families make many sacrifices to provide a catholic education for their children. While we have a strong and proud tradition of providing quality education in some of the poorest neighborhoods of our country, the days of heavily subsidized education by religious sisters and brothers are a fleeting memory for most of us. Tuition and other revenue streams rarely cover the total cost of our schools, but still we thrive in our commitment to make such a positive difference in our nation and in our world. Graduation rates from Catholic High Schools are higher than any other, at 98%, with more than 85% successfully entering college. Those are all data to be proud of. Education is a silver bullet for many of the ills of our world, and the Catholic Church has been consistent in its commitment to ensuring that well-rounded students have the opportunity to enjoy quality education - an education in which religious and personal values are instilled in students, as we partner with parents in the formation of their children.

Here at Lourdes, we have every reason to be proud of our many years of catholic education. From the opening of our parish school in 1959 up to now, the quality leadership provided by administration, faculty and staff provides a narrative of excellence which is inspiring. Our current school leadership stands on the shoulders of all who have gone before them, and they do so with pride and dignity, as they make their own contribution to our tradition of excellence.

This year, one of our own, Mrs. Chris Glaspy (2nd Grade), has been recognized by her peers, and awarded a national honor as one who embodies academic excellence and commitment to faith. As a recipient of the National Catholic Education Association’s “Lead Learn Proclaim” award, Mrs. Glaspy is an example of dedication and excellence to inspire all of us.

Our commitment to education must be making a difference, because our young students consistently inspire me to ongoing dedication and commitment, not only in my faith life, but in all my endeavors. Their participation in sports, academics, and in the broader life of our parish community are an example to all of us, and a witness to their own growing faith as members of our parish family. Both Mr. Brough, our Principal and myself will be available during Open House this week (or at any other time by appointment) to meet with anyone interested in a Catholic School education for their children.
